jobs jobs jobs – creation

chebucto rude

rant time. i’ll try to keep it short. and bitter. dateline halifax: the chebucto road widening goes ahead unabated, though not unopposed. the plan – which sees trees destroyed and the already unbearable street made that much more – adds an extra lane of traffic, while paving the way for more consumption and pollution over livable space and sustainable transit strategy. check it: HERE or better yet HERE.

essentially the plan allows single-occupancy vehicles more space on the road from the airport and dartmouth across the macdonald bridge and on to the shopping centre and bayer’s lake business park [note: no teeter-totters or slides to be found at the park (okay, unless you count mcdonald's playland), though there is a home depot and wal*mart]. rather than revitilize the dying downtown, better throw our lot with the multi-nationals and their big boxes, including the new ones opening (opened?) on the airport highway. they know what’s best for us, don’t they?

this from the ass-backwards group known as the nova scotian government, representative in name only. the greedy fat cats love selling out their citizens and their best interests, all at rock bottom prices. and they’ve been doing it for years. see the michelin bill or the current atlantica. but hey, they’re elected to create jobs jobs jobs. no matter that those jobs are part-time, no-benefit dead-end affairs.

and as usual the shortsighted thieves are using the goon squad known as the halifax police department to ensure that civil protest is checked and discouraged. details HERE. this from the same force that i have personally seen use unnecessary and brutal tactics on several occasions, including one particularly viscous tazing. and these guys are known racists too. historically there’s the case of Viola Desmond while just the other day we got THIS (read this one).

halifax isn’t all bad. in fact, in four-ish years of living there, i was struck by how invoative and interesting a place it is. i loved the ecclectic stores, galleries, music and people. i loved the coast. too bad it’s part of mostly parochial nova scotia, where the law of the land is screw the city and sell our souls. by the way, i now live in T*O*R*O*N*T*O.

for passionate details on this story from a real activist (unlike me) read CitizenShift community blogger Katie McKay. these pics of protest live from chebucto graciously provided by the pretty picketer herself:

i made this a little while ago but it seems fitting with the above. enjoy of life. yours with love, the new deference… email newdeference@gmail.com or post HERE.

  2. Ahoy!

Thanks for spreading the word about the happenings on Chebucto. I took hundreds of photographs on the street during these past few weeks and I want as many people as possible to see what is taking place.

Come check out our Critical Mass: Wheels of Change dossier we’ve been putting together. It’s a collection of various media that celebrates the bicycle and the postiive effects it can have on communities. Critical Mass is a way of reclaiming the streets, emphasizing the importance of PEOPLE in the streets.

Come be a part of the CitizenShift community!

Keep it livable & Live it Up,
    Katie
